How much compost
do you need?

TREES, SHRUBS:  Backfill the planting hole with compost.  Mulch with a 1-3 inch layer of compost around plants, extending 6 inches beyond the drip line. Do not mound compost and mulches up around stems and tree trunks (this practice invites insects and diseases).

FLOWER AND VEGETABLE GARDENS:  Work 2-3 inches of compost into the top 6 inches of soil before planting.

TURFGRASS:  Work 2-3 inches of compost into the top 6 inches of soil prior to sod placement or seeding.

CONTAINERS AND RAISED BEDS:  Add transplants to containers and beds filled with a blend of compost and potting soil.

FOUNDATIONS:  Replace compacted and contaminated fill along building foundations with a blend of compost, sand, and topsoil.

MULCH:  Spread 1-3+ inch layer around plants to prevent erosion, act as a weed barrier, and conserve water.  Top with a thin layer of your favorite landscape mulch, if desired.

MIX CALCULATOR

When blending mixes for raised beds or landscape beds, use this formula:

Square feet to be covered x depth to be filled (in inches)
x 0.0031 = cubic yards of mix needed.

Compost can be used instead of peat moss for most applications.  Remember that compost is a concentrate.  Use no more than 30% compost in your mix.
